Who Built the Morrison Planetarium Projector: A Look Back at the Incredible Technology
The Morrison Planetarium Projector, located in the California Academy of Sciences in San Fransisco, is regarded as one of the most advanced planetarium projectors in the world. Its construction dates back to the 1920s, when the Academys Director of Exhibits, Frank Peridier, dreamt of creating a planetarium that would allow visitors to travel through the cosmos and experience the wonders of the universe.
Peridier approached engineer and inventor Frank G. Hendershot with the idea to create a device capable of projecting stars and constellations onto a dome-shaped ceiling. Hendershot had extensive experience with optics and mechanical devices, having worked on various inventions, including the Hendershot Magnetic Motor.
Together, they worked on creating a device that would project a hyper-realistic night sky onto a dome-shaped ceiling. The device has been updated over the years; in 2016, the Academy replaced the projectors original analog system with a digital system, enhancing its capabilities even further.
