How to Build a DIY Slide Projector for your Next Science Project
A slide projector is a device that projects a small, transparent image onto a larger screen for everyone to see. It can be used to show photographs, diagrams, and even handwritten notes. Materials Needed:
- Shoebox
- Large magnifying glass
- Small, clip-on desk lamp with a flexible arm
- Cardstock or thin cardboard
- Glue or tape
- Scissors

- Slides or transparencies
Directions:
1. First, gather all of your materials together. Take out the magnifying glass from its frame, and set it aside.
2. Next, trace a circle around the magnifying glass on a piece of cardstock or thin cardboard with a marker or pencil. Then, cut out the circle with scissors.
3. Tape or glue the magnifying glass into the cut-out circle, making sure it’s securely in place.
4. Cut a square or rectangular hole in one side of the shoebox using scissors. The hole should be about the same size as the cut-out circle you just made.
5. Now, attach the desk lamp to the inside of the shoebox, on the opposite side of the hole. Make sure the flexible arm of the lamp can be positioned so that it shines directly onto the magnifying glass.
6. Cut a piece of cardstock or thin cardboard into strips, and slot them into the bottom part of the shoebox. These strips will hold your slides or transparencies in place.
7. Load up your slides or transparencies, and turn on the lamp. Adjust the flexible arm to position the light on the magnifying glass, and then focus the image on the wall or screen.
8. Voila! You’ve created your own DIY slide projector.
