How to Build a Pinhole Projector for Eclipse: A Guide for Viewing One of Natures Greatest Shows

One of the safest and easiest ways to view a solar eclipse is by building a pinhole projector.
A pinhole projector is a simple device that can be made at home using materials that you probably already have lying around. Heres how to build one:
Step 1: Gather Materials
To build your pinhole projector, youll need the following materials:
- A cardboard box (it should be deep enough to contain your head and the projector)
- Scissors or a box cutter
- Aluminum foil
- A pushpin or a needle
- Tape or glue
- White paper
- A ruler
Step 2: Cut a Hole in the Box
Cut a square hole in one side of the box, leaving at least an inch of space around the edges. The size of the hole will determine the size of the projected image, so use a ruler to measure the size that you want. Make sure that the edges of the hole are clean and free of any jagged edges.
Step 3: Cover the Hole with Aluminum Foil
Cut a piece of aluminum foil thats large enough to cover the hole with some extra on each side. Place the foil over the hole and tape or glue it down around the edges.
Step 4: Make a Pinhole
Use a pushpin or needle to poke a small hole in the center of the aluminum foil. The smaller the hole, the sharper the projected image will be.
Step 5: Add the Screen
Place a piece of white paper inside the box on the opposite side of the pinhole. Ensure the screen is flat, and press it against one side of the box.
Step 6: Project the Image
To create your projector, place the box on your head with the pinhole side facing the Sun. Stand with your back to the Sun, and hold the box steady. You should see an inverted image of the Sun projected onto the paper screen inside the box. You can adjust the distance between the box and the screen to focus the image.
Remember, even though this is a safe way to view a solar eclipse, you should never look directly at the Sun without proper eye protection, including protective glasses or specially designed solar viewers.
