How to Use a Pinhole Projector for Solar Eclipses

Here’s a simple guide on how to make and use a pinhole projector for solar eclipses:
1. Gather your materials
A pinhole projector can be made with everyday materials that you may already have at home. All you need is a cardboard box (big enough to cut out a rectangular viewing window), a piece of white paper, aluminium foil, tape, and a sharp pin or small nail.
2. Make a pinhole in the aluminium foil
Using a sharp pin or small nail, make a pinhole in the centre of the aluminium foil. The pinhole should be small and precise, as this is what will create the projection of the sun.
3. Secure the aluminium foil onto one end of the cardboard box
Tape the aluminium foil onto one end of the cardboard box, making sure that it is flat and even. The pinhole should be facing upwards towards the sun.
4. Cut a rectangular viewing window on the opposite end of the box
Using a knife or scissors, cut out a rectangular viewing window on the opposite end of the cardboard box. The window should be big enough to fit your head while still blocking out any unwanted light.
5. Place the white paper inside the cardboard box
Place the white paper inside the cardboard box, facing towards the aluminium foil. This is where the projection of the sun will be visible.
6. Point the pinhole projector towards the sun
With the pinhole facing upwards, point the pinhole projector towards the sun. The sun’s image will then be projected onto the white paper inside the cardboard box, allowing you to view the eclipse safely.
