How to Make a Projector without Magnifying Glass: A Step-by-Step Guide
Projectors are a great way to display presentations, movies, and other content on a large screen. However, many projector designs require a magnifying glass, adding complexity and expense to the build. In this article, we’ll show you how to make a simple projector without a magnifying glass, using just a few materials and straightforward techniques.
Materials:
- Cardboard box
- Smartphone or tablet
- Scissors
- Tape
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Black construction paper
- White paper or fabric
- Small mirror
Step 1: Cut a rectangular hole in one side of the cardboard box, leaving about 1 inch of cardboard around the edge. This will be the projection screen.
Step 2: Cut a small notch in the top of the box, opposite the projection screen. This is where the mirror will be placed later.
Step 3: Line the inside of the box with black construction paper, making sure to cover any gaps or edges where light might leak out.
Step 4: Cut a cardboard tube or roll from a paper towel to fit snugly around your smartphone or tablet. This will be the projector lens.
Step 5: Cut a small hole in the side of the cardboard tube, at the end that will face the projection screen.
Step 6: Place the tube over the camera lens on the back of your smartphone or tablet, making sure it’s centered over the lens.
Step 7: Turn on a bright image or video on your device, and hold it about 2 inches away from the hole in the cardboard tube.
Step 8: With the device in place, adjust the position of the tube until the image appears in focus on the projection screen.
Step 9: Place the mirror in the notch on top of the box, angled downwards towards the end of the cardboard tube.
Step 10: Place a white paper or fabric screen opposite the projection screen, a few feet away from the box. Adjust the angle of the mirror until the image appears in focus on the screen.
Congratulations! You’ve just made a simple projector without a magnifying glass. This design can be adjusted for different device sizes and projection distances, and with a little creativity, you can even build a permanent projector enclosure or customize the appearance of the image with filters or effects.
